All About the Power Play Feature in the US Powerball

Australia's Powerball lottery game is similar in many ways to the original American version of the game. In both games you select main numbers which are drawn from one drum, and one additional number, called the Powerball, which is drawn from a separate drum. But along with a bigger guess range, the US Powerball has one feature that Australian Powerball doesn't have, and that is the Power Play option. When you can increase your non-jackpot prizes by as much as 10 times. Here is how it works.

What Is Power Play?

The Power Play feature is a multiplier available with the US Powerball lottery. For a small additional fee to your ticket, you can use it to give your prizes a sizable boost. If you win any of the secondary prizes in the US Powerball, the Power Play feature can boost them significantly. Another prize multiplier is the US Mega Millions Megaplier feature, which can increase prizes by up to five times!

Power Play does not apply to the US Powerball jackpot, but it can increase all the other prize divisions in the game. It can double the second division's US$1 million and it can boost the others to some mouth-watering amounts. In the table below, you can see just how much you stand to win with this amazing multiplier.

How Does US Powerball Power Play Work?

The Power Play multiplier increases the secondary prizes in the US Powerball, as shown in the table above. To get these augmented prizes, you have to match the required Powerball numbers for a secondary prize category. If you do, and you have Power Play on your ticket, then you are in for a fortune.

After the US Powerball officials draw the main numbers and the Powerball, they also draw the Power Play number. The numbers that go into the Power Play barrel are 2, 3, 4, and 5. When the jackpot is US$150 million or lower, the number 10 is also added to the barrel. The drawn Power Play number determines the number of times that secondary prizes are increased.

For example, if the Power Play number of the draw is 3 and you’ve been lucky enough to scoop the US$50,000 3rd division prize, then the multiplier will up your prize to US$150,000. Considering the small investment required for a Power Play entry, this is one feature you should not overlook!
